This is a narrative from T'ang Dynasty China about an encounter between a Zen Master and a monk, and how the Master nearly drowned the monk in an effort to help him to enlightenment. It was taken from several sources, chiefly "The Eight Gates of Zen" by John Daido Loori, but I re-worded it entirely in order to preserve my teacher's copyright. It is a typical narrative from the "Golden Age" of Zen in China and reveals something about the transmission of the Dharma for the discerning reader. The nondiscerning reader won't make any sense of it.--Barbara O'Brien
